"Is it possible that your number changes over the years? I remember being a 1 like five or six years ago, and now I did the test just for fun and I'm a 4 apparently (?)"
This was such a great question I got over on Instagram the other day. While these two types on the surface may look very different, there are some very interesting similarities that do make this confusing sometimes.
Both are very idealistic, Ones have an ideal version of how the world "should" be and Fours have an idealistic version of themselves. And both deal with the specific feeling of frustration (along with Type 7s) when that ideal version isn't lived up to.
Most confusing though can be that when a One is in stress, they move to a Type Four, where they inner critic intensifies and they can slip into more depressed feelings.
And then a Four is in growth or feeling secure, it's Arrow is to a One, bringing the needed structure and routine to their ideals and creative projects.
Key differences covered in the episode include:
1) how they each make decisions
2) their orientation to time
3) how they get their needs met
4) how they handle conflict
5) handling the common good vs. personal desires

So grab your notebook or open up your notes app, and I will see you in class. Today we are looking at a mistiming component mistyping combination between the type one, the improver, and the type four, the individualist. On the surface, it may not look like they have a lot in common. They do have some key similarities. They also have some key differences, and we're gonna get into five of those to help you narrow down, give you some additional clues if this is one that you are also struggling with. So, right off the bat, fours and ones are arrows to one another. So that might be a cause of the confusion between the two. One going to a four in stress, so that inner critic intensifying, becoming a little bit more melancholy, maybe a little bit more depressed and negative in that place. And then a type four goes to a one in growth when they are really in a healthy spot, healthy season, um, putting structure and routine to their creative genius and all their ideas to actually bring those to life. So that will be a key reflection point is where are you in your life? What's going on as you take the assessment, as you look and decide, am I a four or a one? The other um key similarity is that they are both along with the type seven, and this grouping has to do with being an idealist. So ones are very idealistic when it comes to what is possible for the world. We could live up to these grand expectations and standards. And then type four is thinking, oh my gosh, I have so uh this idealistic vision for who I could be as a person. And both of them and the sevens will get really frustrated. That feeling of frustration might be something you actually hear them say, hear yourself say, um, when others aren't living up to those expectations or standards or that idealistic version of the world, or when you are not living up to that idealistic vision of your for yourself. So those are the similarities where you're going to run into some um differences. The key differences is one being your center of intelligence where you make decisions from. So a type one is in the body center, they have a strong gut reaction. They may not be able to tell you how they know, they just know. Whereas a four is in the heart center, feeling center, and they're going to check in with their feelings. How do I feel about this? Whereas a one is going to think, what is there for me to do here? What do I need to do in this situation? And ones are going to check in or fours are going to check in, how do I feel in the situation? Um, they also have some key differences in how they handle conflict. So a one is in this um competency grouping with our threes and our fours, and they're thinking, data, not drama, when a problem happens, when conflict happens. And so for a one, they're gonna be thinking, I'm sure there's we're sensible, mature, rational adults here. I'm sure we can just come to a sensible solution here. Let's just get to work on that. Whereas a boar is going to need to express their sadness, their worry, their anger, whatever feeling that they have, and they're in that emotional reactivity category with the sixes and eights when it comes to handling a conflict. And not only are they gonna want to vent and express it, but whoever they're sharing it with, they also have an expectation that that person is going to have the same intensity of emotions and be as upset about that problem that they are. So another key difference. Um, another key difference is how they view time. So ones are tend to be in this present orientation to time, although ones, I've heard many of you say that you actually identify more as being in the future, which makes sense because you're planning for a current problem in the future, um, but you're really focused in on the task, the the present, the problem right in front of you, forgetting how far you've come and not necessarily seeing all the possibilities and hope that's on the other side of the mountain. And then a four tends to be in the past time orientation where you're maybe a little bit more nostalgic, but also thinking of all the things that have gone wrong and um forgetting all that you have right in front of you that is so good and all that's possible in the future. So there's another difference. Um, a fourth difference is how you go about getting your needs met. So a four is going to withdraw and kind of pull away from others, hoping that that will actually get people's attention, thinking, wait a minute, where is the type four? Where do they go? Hoping that they'll be missed, whereas a type one will get their needs met by really is especially if they are again feeling frustrated, like people aren't living up to their standards, they're going to press their opinions urgently and sternly and intensely on others, um, to and hoping that others will realize all the things that they're doing wrong and that you need to do it, be doing it this way. Um, that so that's how they're gonna go about getting those needs met. And then lastly, wants tend to be a little bit more self-restrained, um, able to put the common good in front of their own personal wants and needs, uh, whereas a type four tends to be a little bit more self-centered, self-focused, and will put their desires, wants, um, personal needs in front of the common good. Again, not always, sometimes those are just some um key differences. Both of them have a very intense and harsh inner critic, and so that can be another reason for some of that confusion. Um, ones inherently feel like there is um fours inherently feel like there is something wrong with them. They were born defective in some way, and there's really nothing that they can do about it. Whereas a one feels like if I could just do it right, then I could be that person, then I I could do it, if I could just do it better, if I could be better, then there's hope for me, but they never quite can be as perfect as they want to be. So it's like there's something I could do about it. Whereas a four is like there's nothing I could do about this, it's just how I am. So it's kind of a bonus differentiator. Um, again, if this is something that you are still struggling with, but um this wasn't enough, or you realized, oh my gosh, this is my type, I see it now, but what do I do with it?
